Macular Hemorrhage from Bungee Jumping

A 25-year-old woman with no clinically significant medical history and with normal coagulation and hematologic studies went bungee jumping from a vertical height of 150 ft (45.7 m). Immediately afterward, she noticed a substantial decrease in vision in her left eye, with a large central scotoma; no other symptoms were noted and there was no pain. On examination, the patient's right eye was found to have a normal disc and vessels (Panel A, arrowhead) and normal fovea and macula (Panel A, arrow). Examination of the left eye showed a normal disc and vessels (Panel B, arrowhead), but the foveal and macular architecture was obscured by a large macular hemorrhage just below the level of the internal limiting membrane (Panel B, arrow). Vision was 20/400 in the left eye when the patient used peripheral scanning and 20/20 in the right eye. The patient had a form of Valsalva retinopathy due to increased venous pressure in the upper body, brought about by sudden deceleration in the head-down position (such as occurs during bungee jumping). She underwent surgery with evacuation of the blood in the left eye. Visual acuity in the left eye 1 week later was 20/25 and has remained stable.

Not your home !!!!!

Have you ever felt that you are not the part of the family ? Ever cried thinking that no she cannot be my own. Because she disgusts me , she hates me . Then why am i here ? Do i run away or just stay here , living at a unknown house , thinking i have no future ? Thinking that what will i do if i run away ? Do i go to my relatives or do i just hang around day and night ?I have no answer even when m searching for the answer for years long ? Why do people have to live such a life, full of misery , anger , a huge pressure since the time you wake up. It's the time when you wish that you would never wake up after a good night's sleep.
You do so much and at last it's not enough. The expectation always is way above our mind.I can't understand what is it.Is it the love or simply the hatred.I want my chances to come. To take me to my way.My future. My destiny.

Who is the Father ?

My dog finally gave birth to 5 puppies after so much of waiting. haha. The vet had given the date a week back and we were desperately waiting for the puppies to pop out :D . Finally it did.But after the puppies are born we are very eagerly waiting for the doc again. Why ? Coz to know who the father is. Since my dog , Sofi , is a german shepard and is brownish n blackish. It has given birth to all black puppies and they are purely black. So who is the father ? But m glad she made it . :)

Good Morning everyone!!! It's 8:11 am here at y place and i am minfront of my computer with a cup pf tea. Can u believe it the governent of nepal has increased the load shedding schedule. I mean what are we supposed to do in just 4 hrs time. No tv , no computer. Nepal is definitely going back to the dark ages.We had no light since yesterday nite 8 pm till today morning 8 am. Weekends !!!

Firstly hoping all my blog friends especially Sara had a great weekend. Due to our country's heavy power cut i couldnt even come online. Anyways my weekend was better.
Saturday was great . Had planned for the movie , the one which got 8 awards i.e The Slumdog Millionaire. Well the movie was pretty cool.Me and my boyfriend snuggled close together even in the theatre ;). wouldn't miss a chance to be close to him . :)After the movie we went for a cup of a coffee and some talks. Then he dropeed me home. There's always a feeling of loneliness as soon as he drops me off. But then thinking that i will get to meet him on the next day brings a sense of relief. And not to mention there's a;ways a 1 hour talk in the phone before going to bed.:)

Funny thing :As soon as the movie ended they were giving the names of the actors. And my boyfren so innocently asked where was this character ( the character was a police officer and was there from the beginning of the movie till the end ).. I couldnt stop laughing when i looked at his face. He was trying to remember so hard.haha

Sunday too wasn't that bad. Finally we had our valentine's day shopping. I got him a pair of shoes of his choice and for me a red top. He insists that i buy more. Well now i guess i should ;). Only a top os not enough. Well planning to go another weekend as he has office the whole weekend and m not allowed to leave home late evenings. So i so wish the weekends would come soon.

My days..

Sitting all alone sometimes from time to time i come to think atleast one day of seeing myself as someone , someone very special , something to the world. I know now that i am usually silent not as a bubbly character i used to be but still i tend to be the same as before.I do some thinking , noo a lot of thinking to be precise. What i should do and what not ? What could have made things better and what should i do to make life better . Thinking of it waves of emotion come and pass away. Life is a rollercoaster. :). Is it only me wanting always more than what i got ?It isn't bad in a way. Reaching for the sky , but again the bad impact ... losing what we got in our hands in the present.

Anger has really gone over my head.Everyone and every little things tend to get into my nerves these days. But i control . But i don't opt the right way to control it.When will the better days come ? Patience says Mr. B. That is the thing i lack.I have a lot more to do in life and why do i think the time is so less ? A lot to do and so less time and due to my negligience i m losin my time. damn me.

Anger !!!

I am angry because i failed myself and i have to wait for the better days just because of me. I have to waste my time , my precious time . I have realised how precious the time has become and how hard it is to stay at home just doing nothing. waiting for the day to come.Nothing can happen until the day. I sometimes ask the one upthere is it only me u r after ? I am frustrated because of the rising anger inside me. The hatred i have for many of the things and the desire of being alone. The whole day not being able to talk with anyone and at the end of the day everyone showing up. Sometimes i feel am i the only available one ? Does my life end up here ? I am depressed thinking WHAT NEXT ? WHAT MORE ?

Every people in the world may have celebrated their valentine day on 14th feb. But me n my bf were quite unfortunate. My Baby Pumpkin

The day was soo good today. The weather was changing in minutes though . Thank God it didn't rain. After the sun started peeking beyond the clouds i hurriedly dressed up and went off to see my little pumpkin (that's my younger sister's 1 month baby). I love babies. My younger sister hasnt kept a name for her yet but i call her pumpy (short for pumpkin). As you might see the pic she is lil black. But noooo , she was not like that when she was born. She was soooo milky white , but as a tradition in our country,Nepal , after the baby is born that pregnant woman n the baby should sit in sun for hours.I admit sun is necessary for small babies but my relatives they keep babies in sun fir sooo long that their skin turns black in a day. Anyways she's a month old haha n c's so cute. She likes to be carried around. As soon as we put her in bed she starts crying. She's soooo cute.Anyways i totally had a good time with her.

Again the same day !!!

Boredom is killing me...Luck aint on my side too. After a straight 8 hr long power cut off , finally i can open my computer and check my mails n all.You really can't imagine how boring it is when u can's watch tv , nor can u log on to your computer. My dad says we are back in the dark ages. N i say yeahhhh.....maybe !!! But after i checked my mails n all i had nothing to do .then i logged into linkreferral.com and started surfing others blog. Some blogs u know are really cool. esp the personal blogs. It's interesting to read about peoples daily life's activities and find out that even when people are living thousand miles away from us , their lives are not at all different from us. They are bored too but not with the same problem. Well I am glad i ain't the only one. haha

LG Arena KM900 is now official

LG has officially released word on its Arena KM900 cell phone which is set to be its flagship multimedia model, where it will take centerstage at Mobile World Congress ‘09 later this month. You can tell by the specifications below that this will be a power-packed handset that does not skimp on features, and we’re extremely interested in the rich 3D graphics found in its intuitive, touch-based menus that seem to look easy and natural to navigate through. We wonder whether this will be able to give the iPhone 3G a run for its money…

Tri-band GSM/UMTS/HSDPA 7.2 Mbps connectivity
3″ 800 x 480 WVGA 262K color touchscreen display
5 megapixel camera with DVD quality video recording
FM Radio
Mobile TV
A-GPS support
1000 mAh battery with 300 hrs stand-by and 230 min talk time
Wi-Fi
“S-Class” 3D interface
There’s no word on pricing or availability though. How much do you think this will cost, on a contract and unlocked?

Three USB 2.0 Ports
6-cell Li-ion Battery (4400 mAh)
2.95 lbs.
10.2” (W) x 8.0” (D) x 1.31” (H)

You will be able to choose from a quartet of high-gloss color options including seashell white, sapphire blue, ruby red and diamond black to suit your personality. It isn’t all just work though, as Acer has made sure it looks good as well with stylish details such as an aerodynamic-shaped metallic hinge with a colored accent and a brushed-metal palm rest that are pleasing to the eyes. Each purchase will also come with preinstalled software from Acer including Acer eRecovery Management, Acer Launch Manager, Adobe Reader, McAfee Internet Security Suite, Microsoft Office Trial 2007. A one-year limited warranty is standard practice here, and we think this would do pretty well considering the size and design factors, as I find it most comfortable to work with a 10.1″ netbook’s keyboard. Anything smaller and I get finger cramps shortly thereafter.

Plasma Heart

If you’re looking for a Valentine’s gift still, here’s a cute one. Instead of the usual boring plasma ball, you could pick up this one that’s shaped like a heart. Then you could give her a card with some cheesy bit about an electrifying connection. Nothing says Valentine’s Day like things so sweet they could make even the sappiest girl a bit nauseous. Despite all the potential things that could be said along with this gift, it would still make for a great geeky gift. How can you resist it when it combines love and geekery so well?

The plasma heart works like your average plasma ball, the blue rays will instantly react to your touch by moving to come in contact with the tips of your fingers. The heart itself is made of glass and is small enough that it’d be great for you desktop and won’t get in the way or hog space. The heart is USB powered, so to get it up and running just plug it into your computer. It will at the very least give you something to do when work isn’t keeping your attention. You can purchase this on USB Brando for $17.

Toshiba TG01 vs Iphone and Blackberry Bold.

Two phones that we know are loved and make the top ten easy is the iPhone 3G and BlackBerry Bold, but there is a new phone out this year to add a little something different.

With the hopes to shake things up a little the Toshiba TG01 will be released in summer of 2009 (no exact date is known of yet). So what’s so special about the TG01?

The Toshiba TG01 features include: only 9.9-mm thin, a 4.1-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) touchscreen, custom Toshiba 3D GUI based on Windows Mobile 6.1, microSD slot, WiFi, GPS and HSDPA data.

While the above features a nice, they are not the most notable. The winner feature of the TG01 is its 1GHz Snapdragon chip that should make it considerably faster than any device out today (including the iPhone an Blackberry’s).

You can check out some amazing hands-on photos over at electricpig, these show the Toshiba TG01 vs. iPhone 3G and BlackBerry Bold in photo.

The Grid Tag USB Drive

Here’s another great USB drive that’s perfect for those that have a tendency to lose their USB drive. With flash drives being so small and only getting smaller, it’s understandable that some people lose theirs on occasion. Even those that are great about keeping track of their things, have their hectic days where the little things turn up missing. With these USB drives, they’d stay attached to your book bag or belt and it’d never again be far from where you need it.

They’re even brightly colored to accommodate those that don’t want to be stuck with boring gray or black USB drives. The Grid Tags would be especially great for younger students that have just started using a flash drive. That first while when you’re trying to get used to having a USB drive around is usually when they get lost the absolute most. The Grid Tag USB Drives come in 1GB which is about $50 and 2GB which will cost you $70. Unfortunately these are being sold in Japan, so for those of us in the rest of the world, they will be hard to get our hands on.

Another day in my life

Everytime i think i've got to d bottom of d pain,i tend to find a new way to sink even lower n i know it's d worst...no matter how bad it is n no matter whatever happens to meh frm now on these few mins will remain wid meh as a shining cautionarybeacon. Is it better lyin down on d bed thinkin hard after d conversation or is it better to cheer urself?i keep askin myself d same thing n i keep lyin down on mah bed until i fall asleep....cryin ofcourse.....n when i get up n i can't take it anymore i die deep inside.....deep inside sumthing sinks.....sumthing breaks knowinly n unknowinly.....I saw for d first time hoe scared i was of losin sumone.....n hoe dis fear has prevented meh frm all sorts of things....givin up smokin....given up mah so called bad habits n all.....Everyone does have d fear of losin sumone ....by any means rite?....not only meh.....death, d ex....anything....Y can't i be less emotional ?...have a heart of a stone so tht i wouldn't love d person so deep n would hurt d person.....damn d fuckin wishes neva cms true rite?

The world ain't urs BABY !!!!!

9 months in d womb n we r brought in d same way into this world.d same way we r loved n our wishes r fulfilled.we grow up n then d differences start.d sarcasm , d pretence , d superiorty complex.d every negative things, widout oneself realising.we expect to be better, better than others in every way, perfect in all d ways we can.to be d "one" in everything we do.but y do we forget tht human being r not all perfect.there's alys sumthing tht pulls us down.you ask for d perfect figues, you ask for d brains or u ask for d life of d perfect person u imagine but we forget they in a way suck too.we dunt know em.we just see d outer lives of them but if we get to know em....every person has d bitter part of their own.more or less d same as ours.every ppl stands in d same line only tht we dunt see d line.in every case we see us ourselves in d last n others in d front.each one feels d same.THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER ON D OTHER SIDE.Never ever make d mistake to wish u lived sumone else's life only coz d person is rich n lives a happier life.d things may never seem d same.

i say IT SUCKS TO BE U DAMMIT !!!!! .... u r no way different than meh.just coz i failed doesnt make u superior than meh. maybe i dunt have that u had. LUCK !!!!! ....but d world goes around n cms around. i'll have my day n you dunt have what i have. THE WORLD AIN'T URS BABY !!!

The Real MEH !!!!!

I'm all grown up...but i don't feel it right.there r so many things which i yet don't know n till feel like a child. So many things out there which makes meh wish i still was a child.Musn't let them see meh cry , musnt let em see meh lose coz m all grown up n wise.I can take care of myself ...i do say it to all ...but deep inside i say it to myself.i do need sumone...m too tired of all these things...n m too old to believe as to fairies n good things exists ....i watch d cartoons ...good things happenin ...miracles...smile at d end of d happy ending n wish what if life was like dis? but again m too wise n too old to believe in these......then i wish god y ain't a still a child? what's d need to grow up ? to realise d things...to get responsibilities? coz i try n it's so hard to believe.....i try but i cant stop wishin .....i try n i cant stop lukin at stars n wish.....

Nyahhh tht's meh i guess....i will when i have to .....I shall still believe in stupid things tht may not exists n things tht r just a make belief.....i shall still get angry n forgive n be forgiven....i shall be Meh. Love meh or hate meh...i dunt care....tht's meh ....even if i lose or win in mah journey of life.I dunt wanna grow up. :)

You love d person , cant live widout him but still u wanna let go coz u feel sumthing is just not right....may be the thing u did for him was just not good enough.....Not enough for him to be happy.....You just completely fall apart when u talk wid him....coz u love him truely....dunt just wanna let him go.....No matter who broke ur heart or how betrayin it was u will never get through it widout d help of him !!!!
Are all d relationships based on lies n mutually accepted delusions? Pretense ? are all our lives based on tht ? we know what's inside us still we pretend n smile !!! The make beliefs n d pretence ...i cant drag it through d days.....m getting over it....but i dunt know how long can i go....i remember d day n i just break up inside.....What's holding meh back time n time....i try to move wid time but sumwhe sum part of meh is stuck behind....ummm a Grand gesture ? the Vague gesture? 6 Serious Medical Symptoms

1. Paralysis of the arms or legs, tingling, numbness, confusion, dizziness, double vision, slurred speech, trouble finding words, or weakness, especially on one side of the face or body.

These are signs of stroke -- or a "brain attack" -- in which arteries that supply oxygen to the brain become blocked or rupture, causing brain tissue to die.

Symptoms depend on which area of the brain is involved. If a large blood vessel is blocked, a wide area may be affected, so a person may have paralysis on one side of the body and lose other functions, such as speech and understanding. If a smaller vessel is blocked, paralysis may remain limited to an arm or leg.

2. Chest pain or discomfort; pain in the arm, jaw, or neck; breaking out in a cold sweat; extreme weakness; nausea; vomiting; feeling faint; or being short of breath.

3. Tenderness and pain in the back of your lower leg, chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood.

These are symptoms of a potentially dangerous blood clot in your leg, especially if they come after you've been sitting for a long time, such as on an airplane or during a long car trip. These signs can also surface if you've been bedridden after surgery.

4. Blood in the urine without accompanying pain.

Kidney Stones or a bladder or prostate infection are common causes of blood in the urine.

5. Asthma Symptoms that don't improve or get worse.

Asthma attacks are marked by wheezing or difficulty breathing. When an attack doesn't improve or worsens, a patient should get emergency care.

If an asthma attack is left untreated, it can lead to severe chest muscle fatigue and death, say Shulman and Birge. Some people with persistent asthma hesitate to go to the emergency room because they've gone so many times before, or they need someone to drive them because they're too short of breath. So instead of seeking care, "They try to hang in there," Birge says, even if they need higher doses of inhalants or have decreasing lung function measurements when using a device to measure how well they move air out of their lungs.

6. Depression and suicidal thoughts.

"Depression can be a very, very serious problem because people can commit suicide," Shulman says. "Some people will not seek care when they are depressed because they think that they'll be perceived as being crazy or not strong or not manly, and they have to understand that there is a chemical imbalance going on in their brain. It is a disease just like any other disease."

Symptoms of depression include sadness, fatigue, apathy, anxiety, changes in sleep habits, and loss of appetite. Depression can be treated with medications and psychotherapy.

Hungry snake discovers you are what you eat

A New South Wales man has had an interesting encounter with not one but two snakes, and he has the photos to prove it.

Tony Barton from South Gundagai says he and his wife had just been out for lunch about a month ago when they returned home and spotted a black snake alongside the car.

It turned out to be a red belly black snake about 165 centimetres long - a species well known for a taste for other snakes.

"It looked like there was a stick or branch off a tree that was coming up towards it, so we drove past to about get 10 metres away from it and I ducked up the back lawn and around to have a close look," he said.

Mr Barton says his wife called out to him to ask him what he was staring at.

He yelled back, "Well, it's a jolly big black snake eating another one! Consuming it! You keep an eye on it and I'll duck in and get the camera."

Mr Barton says it took about 10 to 15 minutes for the black snake to fully consume the brown snake, which he says was about 135 centimetres long.

Then it went off for a snooze.

"It was fairly sluggish after such a huge meal," he said.

Regurgitator

Initially, Mr Barton thought someone had killed the snake and it was all a practical joke.

He says when the black snake finished eating the brown snake, something irritated the black and it moved off to try to get a bit of relief from the discomfort.

Not long after, the snake returned - this time to the back lawn.

"I walked up and got within three metres of it," he said.

"I was having a close look at it when it opened its mouth a little bit and I spotted this beady eye and the head of the brown snake in its mouth!

"So I got the camera ready, took the shot as the brown snake came out a few inches, fastened onto the black's lower jaw and pulled itself completely out.

"It had all this mucus all over it. Then the two parted ways."

Mr Barton reckons that somehow the brown snake turned itself around inside the black snake.

"When you tell these stories no-one believes you, but I have the photographs," he said.

Californian woman gives birth to octuplets

A Californian woman shocked doctors by giving birth on Monday to octuplets, believed to be only the second set of eight babies born in the United States.

The six boys and two girls were doing well and were in stable condition in the neonatal intensive care unit, said Dr Karen Maples at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Centre in the Los Angeles suburb of Bellflower.

But two needed some help to breath with ventilators, she told a press conference.

The eight babies were born nine weeks prematurely by Caesarean section over a five-minute period, stunning a 46-member medical team that was expecting only seven babies.

They weighed between 1 pound 8 ounces (680 grams) and 3 pounds 4 ounces (1.47 kilograms) and doctors initially identified them by the letters A through H as they were born.

"We decided to proceed with the delivery in anticipation of seven babies. We had done some drills, some preliminary dry runs," Dr Maples said.

"Lo and behold, after we got to Baby G, which is what we expected, we were surprised by Baby H."

Dr Maples said she had been following the mother, who was not identified, since the first trimester of her pregnancy.

Citing patient confidentiality rules, the hospital declined to say whether the mother had become pregnant through fertility treatments, which can raise the likelihood of multiple births.

"It was a shock, especially with the eighth baby," Dr Maples said.

The mother plans to breast feed all eight babies, her doctors said.

The last octuplets known to have survived in the United States were born in Houston in 1998, in that case six girls and two boys. One of the babies, a girl, died one week after birth.

HTC Touch Cruise

The Touch Cruise is one of those smartphones that has at least one great feature worth writing home about with the “Footprint”. This Footprint has nothing to do with carbon, for it is a GPS feature that allows the user to dock the phone in a car cradle and use it like an ordinary Auto Navigation System.

This phone/GPS device also uses turn-by-turn navigation, and has another geo-tagging feature that enables the user to take “digital postcards” with a 3.2 megapixel camera. I don’t have any more information than that, but I’m guessing this postcard feature will allow the user to send a picture, audio file, and other notes to someone else with the proper coordinates.

The HTC Touch Cruise has an operating system of Windows Mobile 6.1, and has a 2.8 inch TFT-LCD touch-sensitive screen with a QVGA resolution display. The other features are no surprise: it is also outfitted with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity. It also includes a microSD memory card slot, with up to 400 minutes talk-time and up to two weeks standby on GSM.

The HTC Touch Cruise will be available in June, where it will be jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch. Oh, sorry, that’s Tom Cruise. I’m not certain what his price is, but the Touch Cruise will be about $600.

Health Issues

Health Challenges

Despite incredible improvements in health since 1950, there are still a number of challenges, which should have been easy to solve. Consider the following:

  • One billion people lack access to health care systems.
  • Around 11 million children under the age of 5 die from malnutrition and mostly preventable diseases, each year.
  • In 2002, almost 11 million people died of infectious diseases alone, far more than the number killed in the natural or man-made catastrophes that make headlines. (These are the latest figures presented by the World Health Organization.)
  • AIDS/HIV has spread rapidly. UNAIDS estimates for 2007 that there are roughly:
    • 32.8 million living with HIV
    • 2.5 million new infections of HIV
    • 2 million deaths from AIDS
  • There are 8.8 million new cases of Tuberculosis (TB) and 1.75 million deaths from TB, each year.
  • 1.6 million people still die from pneumococcal diseases every year, making it the number one vaccine-preventable cause of death worldwide. More than half of the victims are children. (The pneumococcus is a bacterium that causes serious infections like meningitis, pneumonia and sepsis. In developing countries, even half of those children who receive medical treatment will die. Every second surviving child will have some kind of disability.)
  • Malaria causes more than 300 million acute illnesses and at least 1 million deaths, annually.
  • More than half a million people, mostly children, died from measles in 2003 even though effective immunization costs just 0.30 US dollars per person, and has been available for over 40 years.

These and other diseases kill more people each year than conflict alone.

AIDS

People living with HIV:
  • 33 million people living with HIV worldwide
  • 30.8 million adults
  • 15.5 million women
  • 2.0 million children under 15

New HIV cases in 2007:

  • 2.7 million total new cases
  • 2.3 million adults
  • 370,000 children under 15

HIV-related deaths in 2007:

  • 2.0 million total deaths

Tobacco

Tobacco and smoking have a number of negative effects:
  • Tobacco smoking kills
  • Tobacco exacerbates poverty
  • Tobacco contributes to world hunger by diverting prime land away from food production
  • Tobacco production damages the environment
  • Tobacco reduces economic productivity
  • While the Tobacco industry may employ people, this can be considered an example of “wasted labor”, capital and resources.

Obesity

Food systems causes of obesity:

The main problem has been the increased availability of high energy food, because of:

  • Liberalized international food markets
  • Food subsidies that “have arguably distorted the food supply in favour of less healthy foodstuffs”
  • “Transnational food companies [that] have flooded the global market with cheap to produce, energy dense, nutrient empty foods”
  • “Supermarkets and food service chains [that are] encouraging bulk purchases, convenience foods, and supersized portions”
  • Healthy eating often being more expensive than less healthy options, (despite global food prices having dropped on average).
  • Marketing, especially “food advertising through television [which] aims to persuade individuals—particularly children—that they desire foods high in saturated fats, sugars, and salt.”

Water and Sanitation

Much of the world lives without access to clean water. Privatization of water resources, promoted as a means to bring business efficiency into water service management, has instead led to reduced access for the poor around the world as prices for these essential services have risen.

It takes a great deal of water to manufacture our goods:

  • 1 newspaper takes 150 gallons
  • 1 liter of orange juice takes 1000 gallons
  • 1 pound of beef takes 2500 gallons
  • 1 new car takes 40,000 gallons

Almost fifty per cent of the developing world’s population – 2.5 billion people – lack improved sanitation facilities, and over 884 million people still use unsafe drinking water sources. Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kills and sickens thousands of children every day, and leads to impoverishment and diminished opportunities for thousands more.

Poor sanitation, water and hygiene have many other serious repercussions. Children – and particularly girls – are denied their right to education because their schools lack private and decent sanitation facilities. Women are forced to spend large parts of their day fetching water. Poor farmers and wage earners are less productive due to illness, health systems are overwhelmed and national economies suffer. Without WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), sustainable development is impossible....

HTC -Touch Diamond

By name, the HTC Touch Diamond for Sprint is the same as the unlocked GSM version. However, a number of design changes inside and out make the Sprint model almost like a new device. First, the smartphone has more rounded edges and gets a splash of color with a burgundy back cover that features a smooth soft-touch finish. We were a little torn since we liked the cool prism effect of the GSM version, but also liked the color and feel of the Sprint model. Obviously, style is subjective so your preference may differ, but in general, we'd say both are attractive devices. he Sprint Touch Diamond is slightly thicker and heavier than the current GSM Touch Diamond, but overall it's still a very compact smartphone, measuring 4 inches tall by 2 inches wide by 0.6 inch deep and weighing 4.1 ounces. It feels solid and comfortable to use, and you should have no problem slipping the handset into a pants pocket or purse. Specification :

Top 20 medical breakthroughs for women

1. Obesity
Controlling appetite with leptin
The hot word in obesity this year was leptin. When a connection between this hormone and weight loss was first discovered in 1994, researchers helped fat, overfed lab mice stay slim. And they believed they could do with people what they did with mice: Inject some leptin, and kiss pounds good-bye. Humans, it turned out, were more complicated. When they lost weight their bodies became stingier with calories consumed and more efficient in retaining existing weight. Not willing to give up on leptin, scientists at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City started looking at the hormone as a possible weight-loss-
maintenance drug. They discovered through scans that brain activity in areas connected to restraint and control declines after weight loss. Hike leptin levels, however, and the areas become more active. Michael Rosenbaum, PhD, and colleagues now see new possibilities for leptin in long-term weight control.

2. Infection control
Cracking the MRSA code
More Americans now die each year of the nasty staph infection MRSA (18,650) than from AIDS (15,000). Fortunately, new prevention and treatment options for the bug known officially as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus have emerged. One is a protective nasal gel (XF-73) designed to kill the microbes early on, upon contact, with every breath. (Past anti-MRSA drugs focused on preventing bacteria from spreading or stunting the bacteria’s growth.) Also, surgeons began experimenting on animals this year with MRSA-fighting stitches coated with a virus that fights the MRSA bug but doesn’t affect humans. Each tiny hole for stitches is a potential entry point for MRSA or other stubborn infections, so the idea of fortifying dozens of these sites to prevent chances of future infection is brilliant.

3. Addiction
Using the ER to help alcoholics
It’s no secret that alcoholics and drug abusers visit emergency rooms more often than the average Jane. So this year the American College of Surgeons (ACS) decided to turn that fact of ER life into something more positive. They unveiled SBI — screening and brief intervention — during which ER docs or counselors conduct brief drug or alcohol interventions right on the spot. The idea stems from the belief that emergency settings offer an ideal place to provide wake-up calls to patients who don’t yet have severe substance addictions. Such interventions have been shown to reduce a return to the trauma or ER center by 50 percent.

4. Infertility
Good news for frozen embryos
Freezing embryos allows couples to have several in vitro fertilization cycles from the same egg collection or enables them to hold off for a better time for implantation in a mother who may be undergoing chemotherapy or may have other issues that require her to delay pregnancy. And a new, landmark study from Denmark found that babies born from previously frozen embryos have no increased risk of low birth weight, birth defects, or compromised health, compared with those born from “fresh” ones. According to the research, freezing caused no adverse repercussions, and, in fact, the babies born from the frozen embryos weighed more. That’s good news for moms and babies.

5. Alzheimer’s
New research for brain diseases
Scientists in England this spring won permission from British medical authorities to create new embryos called cytoplasmic hybrids, eggs from rabbits or cows that have had their nuclei replaced with human genetic code. (The United Kingdom puts far fewer restrictions on stem cell use in federal research than the United States does.) No Frankensteins at work here: The goal is to produce stem cells that will help determine the causes of and find treatments for incurable and debilitating conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

6. Colon cancer
Targeted treatments may save lives
When oncologists discovered that different genes (BRCA1, BRCA2, HER2) were linked with different types of breast cancer, lifesaving targeted therapies were soon developed. Now there’s similar positive news for people with colon cancer. Until this summer, late-stage colon cancers were treated pretty much the same — but the discovery of a mutated KRAS colon cancer gene has helped change that. As a result, one-size-fits-all chemotherapy is being replaced with more-personalized treatment that could save lives, according to Eric Van Cutsem, MD, PhD, the Belgian oncologist who shared these findings at an American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting.

7. Smarter sweets
More reasons to eat chocolate
We know that dark chocolate cocoa powder has up to three times the antioxidants found in green tea, plus twice the antioxidants in red wine; that’s good for your heart. And studies have shown that dark chocolate’s polyphenols affect serotonin levels in the brain; that’ll boost your mood. But this year dark chocolate has gained even more favor in medical circles. In one study, heart-transplant patients showed a decreased risk of clogged arteries two hours after consuming 40 grams of dark chocolate. In another, researchers from the University of Illinois found that subjects who ate a 22 gram CocoaVia dark chocolate bar daily for two months lowered their blood pressure and cholesterol levels. And investigation is underway to see if dark chocolate can be used to decrease PMS symptoms. Sweet news for us all.

8. Sleep
How too little hurts women’s hearts
Talk about alarm clocks: After studying both women and men who have trouble sleeping, Duke University Medical Center researchers this spring discovered new links between sleep deprivation and the risk of heart attack. In particular, they learned why sleep problems had more of an impact on female hearts than they had on the cardio systems of men. Turns out women may be more prone to long-term inflammation in their bloodstreams, which results in increased risks of both heart disease and diabetes. In fact, “Women who reported taking a half-hour or longer to fall asleep showed the worst risk profile,” lead researcher Edward Suarez, PhD, explains.

In the sleep trials, Suarez and his colleagues found higher levels of three important signals in the bloodstreams of poor sleepers: C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, both of which are associated with inflammation in numerous tissues, and fibrinogen, a protein that’s associated with heart disease. The study is preliminary but notable because it focused on sleep, disease triggers, and gender.

9. Breast cancer: Another mammo option
A recent Mayo Clinic study of nearly 1,000 women showed that new, gamma-ray cameras detected three times as many tiny tumors (as small as two-fifths of an inch in diameter) as standard mammography in women with dense breasts. This development gives high-risk women another early-detection option besides mammograms and more-expensive MRIs.

10. Breast cancer: An herbal breakthrough
Black cohosh, a plant in the buttercup family, has been shown to stop the growth of some breast cancer cells, according to new research conducted by a French pharmaceutical company and funded in part by the National Institutes of Health. Researchers attribute the cancer-cell death to the agent triterpene glycoside, which is found in black cohosh extract. Should you take it? Ask your doctor. Past research has shown that black cohosh can interfere with certain kinds of chemotherapy and has some adverse side effects. Plus, studies so far have been done only on mice.

11. Breast cancer: One-stop radiation?
For most breast cancer patients who need radiation, treatments typically last up to six weeks. But a new study raises hopes for a one-day treatment known as intraoperative electron beam radiation therapy, or IOERT. Umberto Veronesi, MD, founder of the European Institute of Oncology, shared the findings of an eight-year randomized trial at the International Society of Intraoperative Radiation Therapy conference this year. The results showed that women who received breast-conserving surgery followed by a single dose of IOERT at the time of surgery had a chance of survival equal to that of women who underwent the surgery followed by six weeks of postoperative radiation therapy.

12. Skin
Anti-aging techniques really do work
A landmark review by doctors at the University of Michigan Medical School published earlier this year in the prestigious Archives of Dermatology verified that three leading skin-renewal treatments are all, indeed, medically effective. Carbon dioxide laser resurfacing? Check. Topical retinol products? Check (at concentrations between 0.2 and 0.6 percent). Injections of hyaluronic acid? Check. Each of these three anti-aging treatments can improve skin by strengthening what’s called its “dermal collagen matrix.” The biggest surprise that Gary Fisher, PhD, and his colleagues found? The filler — hyaluronic acid — can also boost the creation of collagen when delivered by syringe; docs had previously thought its value was strictly cosmetic, not medical.

13. Immunity
Reduce stress to live longer
Can we relax our very DNA? For years, scientists have studied telomeres — tiny caps at the ends of chromosomes that shrink, shorten, and weaken with stress. Over time shortened telomeres dampen immunity, experts say, giving conditions like osteoporosis, heart disease, HIV, and AIDS a better chance of taking hold. In fact, in animal studies shortened telomeres were linked to a shortened life span.

14. Better sex
Enhancement drug for women
Move over, Viagra. Earlier this year, LibiGel, a testosterone-based gel for women with sexual dysfunction cleared another hurdle: Although it will be in trials for a few more years, it has passed Food and Drug Administration safety and efficacy phases. In tests, participants using LibiGel (from BioSante Pharmaceuticals) reported a 238 percent increase in satisfying sexual experiences.

15. Wonder extract
Resveratrol gets the nod
You may have heard the good-for-your-heart news about resveratrol, the anti-inflammatory compound found in grapes and wine: Studies in mice have shown that it fights diabetes
and can extend life span. In 2008 it got an even bigger endorsement when the federal government decided to invest big bucks in grapes-against-cancer research. Teaming with a leading biotech firm, Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, the National Cancer Institute is trying to determine how derivatives of resveratrol can affect cancer-cell development. Human studies started just this year, so it’ll be a while before scientists know the impact it has on larger mammals. In the meantime, get your daily dose of resveratrol from a glass of grape juice or a nice Cabernet.

16. Eating disorders
Brain scans reveal anorexia clues
Docs have long been stumped: Why is it so difficult for patients with eating disorders to learn and to “reprogram” healthy eating behavior? In a surprising study at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, researchers used MRI scans to track the brain activity of recovered anorexia patients and found that the reward centers of their brains were damaged — they couldn’t decipher much of a difference between pleasure or reward, at least in the short term. Researchers hope that this knowledge will help them better understand and treat the millions of women with eating disorders in the United States.

17. OB-Gyn
New endometriosis treatment
Add endometriosis to the list of surgeries now being per-formed by surgeons using medical robots. When this technology came on the scene in the 1990s, it was used primarily for prostate surgery and then later in laparoscopic hysterectomies. Now medical robots are reducing the surgery and recovery times for endometriosis treatment. According to Dennis Eisenberg, MD, of Baylor University’s hospital near Plano, Texas, robotic endometriosis-and-fibroid surgery takes an hour or two, and patients can expect to return home one day later; full recovery should take place within one week’s time. Traditional surgeries for endometriosis take four to five hours to complete and weeks of recovery, experts say.

18. Cancer
A gentler way to tackle tumors
It’s not always the medicine that counts, but how it gets delivered. For David Cheresh, PhD, and his cancer-fighting colleagues at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), that led to thinking small — really small. They’ve come up with the first nanoparticle delivery system for pancreatic and kidney cancer chemotherapies. By better targeting the chemo, Cheresh, a professor of pathology at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center, was able to use far smaller doses to halt tumor growth. If you can starve the tumors by cutting off the blood supply, there’s much more precision and markedly less collateral damage, the researchers say. That’s good news for the future of all cancer treatment.

19. Liposuction
Using fat to fight disease
Fat on your belly or thighs? Rarely considered a valuable thing … until now. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) announced this summer that, compared with fat in other areas of the body, belly and inner-thigh fat contain tissue with higher concentrations of stem cells. Surgeons and researchers hope to use the tissue to build stem cell lines and drugs that might one day treat diabetes, spinal cord injuries, or severe brain diseases. “Adult stem cells, derived from our own tissues, hold strong promise for improved clinical therapies,” says J. Peter Rubin, MD, a member of the ASPS Fat Grafting Task Force and co-director of the Adipose Stem Cell Center at the University of Pittsburgh.

20. Acne
More clear skin ahead
For years oral tetracycline and erythromycin have been the standard for treating acne. Now there’s another option: a prescription topical gel called Aczone, which has antibiotic and anti-inflammatory effects. It was approved in 2005 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) but came with all sorts of restrictions for use, including blood monitoring, because of potential side effects. This year, after reviewing the results of trials with 3,000-plus patients, the FDA lifted restrictions. The manufacturer, Allergan, hopes to have the gel on the market in the next few months.

Design The T-Mobile G1 is manufactured by HTC and has a similar look and feel to the company's other Pocket PC smartphones, such as the T-Mobile Wing and the Sprint Mogul. Measuring 4.6 inches tall by 2.1 inches wide by 0.6 inch deep and weighing 5.6 ounces, the G1 is definitely not the sleekest device, and we certainly wouldn't call it sexy. Instead, the words "interesting" and "weird" come to mind. This is mostly because the bottom section of the phone juts out at a slight angle. We asked HTC about this design decision but have yet to hear from them as of press time. Presumably, it's to get the phone's speaker closer to your mouth, which isn't a bad thing but consequently, it affects the ergonomics of the keyboard, which we'll touch on later. In a battle of pure looks, the iPhone would win hands down.

The good: The T-Mobile G1 features a full QWERTY keyboard, 3G support, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. The Google Android operating system offers good integration with Google applications as well as access to the Amazon MP3 Store and YouTube. As more applications become available, the G1 will also become a more powerful smartphone for all types of users.
